2 years after his supposed death, Sherlock hears about the theft of a $50 million painting as he passes through Paris. Intrigued, he investigates further and discovers that one of the employees had encountered a woman the night of the burgulary and unwittingly revealed to her the security code to get past surveillance. A name is also revealed: Erina Norton, the alias Sherlock had given Irene Adler to use as her new identity 3 years ago when he last saw her.
Irene had returned to her old trade as a dominatrix under her new name and was involved in a number of high-profile robberies the past few months across Europe.
He alerts her of his presence through a text and arranges to meet, surprised to find her anxious with a concealed weapon; it confirms his suspicions that she is being blackmailed. Irene offers to hire him to help her track down the source in return for living supplies and accommedation. However, when he refuses, she threatens to reveal his survival to the world. Reluctantly complying, Sherlock begins looking int the case but soon finds himself on a wild goose chase. He realizes Irene is using him as a diversion for her blackmailers and that her real motive is much different than what she told him; to find her kidnapped infant son.
